Beyond Provenance is a transnational film collaboration between art collective Indeks from Bandung and screening platform wysiwyg from The Hague. The project reacts to the Dutch government's recent intent (2023) of giving back looted objects to Indonesia. This transnational initiative explores how film and collaboration can reassess narratives around restitution. Progressive as it seems, in Indonesia there is apparent public scepticism about returning these objects. Doubting their own country’s capabilities to take care of the objects, the focus is still a Eurocentric one – who can best store objects? Other relationships with, and value placed around the objects (emotional, cultural, spiritual, communal) are lesser part of this.

The main output of this project are three short films that take their artefact as a point of departure to address different subjects connected to this convoluted history. Shedding light on three recently restituted artefacts with varied histories and uses, Indonesian and Netherlands-based artists-duo teamed up for each artefacts. Three challenging and widely different video works are to be expected about the Durga Mahisasuramardini (Dyantini Adeline [ID] and Vladimir Vidanovski [MK]), the Keris Klungkung (Taufiqurrahman Kifu [ID] and Hattie Wade [UK]) and the Lombok Treasure (Kae Oktorina [ID]) and christopher tym [UK]).
